Sisters Working It Out (SWIO) proudly hosted Ignite Bronzeville Firestarters, an impactful evening dedicated to education, awareness, and community activation around breast and cervical cancer.
This event brought together young women, survivors, healthcare professionals, advocates, and community members in Bronzeville for one shared purpose: to spark meaningful conversations and empower women to take charge of their health.
Powered by Partnership
Ignite Bronzeville Firestarters was made possible through the collaboration and support of dedicated partners and sponsors, including Patient Advocate Foundation, Chicago Cancer Initiative, Northwestern Medicine, and Bright Star Community Outreach.
Their commitment to advancing health equity and expanding access to care helped create a space where education meets action and where community voices are amplified.
Voices That Inspire and Educate
A key highlight of the evening was the dynamic panel discussion, led by a group of passionate and knowledgeable leaders who each brought a unique and powerful perspective to the conversation.
Moderator Hayley Brown Buxton-Punch guided the discussion with intention and care, creating a safe and engaging space for dialogue.
Dr. Oriana Krivenko, Dr. Marquita Lewis, and Dr. Sonya Bhole provided critical medical insight, helping attendees better understand breast and cervical cancer risks, the importance of early detection, and how to navigate care with confidence.
Breast cancer survivors Hope Coleman, Teela Jackson, Catherine (Kat) Cisco, and a cervical cancer warrior, Brianne Kesinee, shared deeply personal stories that resonated throughout the room. Their honesty, strength, and lived experiences reminded attendees that early detection saves lives and that no one has to face their journey alone.
Together, the panel created a powerful balance of clinical expertise and real-life experience, making the conversation both informative and deeply human.
A Community Showing Up for Itself
What made Ignite truly special was the energy in the room. Attendees showed up ready to listen, learn, ask questions, and support one another.
Young women leaned into conversations about their health, many for the first time. There was a sense of openness, curiosity, and empowerment that carried throughout the evening.
This is what community looks like. This is what change looks like.
The Heart Behind the Work
Behind every successful event is a dedicated team. SWIO extends heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers who gave their time, energy, and care to ensure everything ran smoothly.
From welcoming guests to supporting logistics, their presence helped create a warm, organized, and impactful experience for everyone in attendance.
More Than an Event, It’s a Movement
Ignite Bronzeville Firestarters is more than a one-time gathering. It is part of a larger movement to ensure that women, especially those in medically underserved communities, have access to the knowledge, resources, and support they need to live healthier lives.
At SWIO, we believe that education leads to action, and action saves lives.
This event was a reminder that when we come together as a community, we have the power to change outcomes, shift narratives, and build a future rooted in health equity and empowerment.
Looking Ahead
The conversations sparked at Ignite do not end here. SWIO remains committed to continuing this work through education, outreach, support services, and community-driven initiatives.
Together, we will keep the conversation going.Together, we will continue the activation.Together, we will save lives.
As part of this mission, we are excited to launch the SWIO Young Ambassadors Program this August, a 10-week virtual leadership program designed to empower young women ages 18–39 to become the next generation of advocates and community leaders in women’s health.
