GROWING TOGETHER IN COMMUNITY: SWIO’S IMPACT ACROSS CHICAGO

At Sisters Working It Out (SWIO), community impact begins with showing up, building relationships, and making health education and support more accessible to the people who need it most.

Over the past several months, SWIO has continued to expand our reach across Chicago and surrounding communities through health education, cancer support, community outreach, partnerships, and programs that create pathways to care and wellness.

From our new home at the TURN Center to new opportunities for young women through the Fire Starters Young Ambassador Program, this season represents an exciting chapter of growth for SWIO and the communities we serve.

CREATING MORE ACCESS TO COMMUNITY HEALTH RESOURCES

SWIO’s new home at Bright Star Community Outreach’s TURN Center, 4444 S. Evans Avenue, Chicago, IL, gives us an opportunity to strengthen our presence on Chicago’s South Side and create a welcoming space where community members can connect with health education, cancer support, resources, and wellness programs.

Having a consistent community space allows SWIO to build stronger relationships and bring trusted information and supportive services closer to residents. It also provides a new home for our Voices of Victory in Action (VVA) Cancer Support Group, helping create a safe and welcoming environment for cancer survivors, caregivers, and individuals impacted by cancer.

SUPPORTING CANCER SURVIVORS BEYOND TREATMENT

Cancer support is about more than treatment. It is also about connection, encouragement, education, and knowing that you do not have to navigate the journey alone.

Through Voices of Victory in Action, SWIO continues to create opportunities for cancer survivors and caregivers in Chicago to connect with others, share experiences, access information, and build community. Gatherings such as the VVA Ice Cream Social remind us of the importance of creating moments of joy and connection alongside ongoing support.

Through partnerships and community-based support group locations, SWIO continues working to make cancer support services and resources more accessible throughout Chicago.

BRINGING HEALTH EDUCATION INTO THE COMMUNITY

Community health education remains at the center of SWIO’s work. Throughout the season, our team participated in community events, health fairs, and neighborhood gatherings, including the One Family Illinois Back-to-School Event, Speaker Welch Back-to-School Health Fair, and Community Health Fair.

These opportunities allow SWIO to meet people where they are, share information about women’s health, cancer prevention, screenings, wellness, and access to care, and connect residents with resources.

Our participation in community conversations such as HE SAID. SHE SAID. also creates space for important discussions about health and prevention. These conversations can help reduce barriers to information and encourage community members to become more proactive about their health.

INVESTING IN THE NEXT GENERATION

This August, SWIO launched the Fire Starters Young Ambassador Program, creating a new pathway for young women to develop their confidence, leadership skills, and knowledge of health and wellness.

The program's first meeting on August 18, 2026, marked an exciting beginning for a new generation of SWIO ambassadors.

By investing in young women today, SWIO is helping cultivate future health advocates and community leaders who can bring what they learn back to their families, schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods.

This work is an important part of addressing health disparities in Chicago. When young women have access to trusted health information and opportunities to develop their voices, they are better positioned to advocate for themselves and help create healthier communities.

Every conversation, community event, partnership, support group, and program contributes to SWIO’s larger mission of improving health outcomes in medically underserved communities.

Our work is rooted in the belief that access to health education, supportive services, and trusted community connections can make a meaningful difference.

As we continue to grow across Chicago, we remain committed to creating pathways to care, cancer support, women's health education, health equity, and community wellness.
